The Phenomenon

When The Hunger Games opened in theaters in March 2012, almost no one was able to predict just how successful it would become. Grossing almost $700 million at the box office, according to IMDb, it capitalized on an exciting market. Young adults were flocking to see the movie in droves because they were fans of the book series. In a trend started by Harry Potter and continued by Twilight, a fandom was already in place for The Hunger Games series, and it was simply expanded upon when the stories moved from the page onto the screen. Suddenly, everyone was clamoring to see how the rest of the series would be adapted into movies. Luckily for them, the release date for the second adaptation, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, had already been announced while the first movie was still filming. Suddenly, the stars, Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth, seemed to be everywhere. The Hunger Games was officially a phenomenon.

The Story

For anyone new to The Hunger Games franchise, the story revolves around a dystopian United States of the future that is ruled by a ruthless president. Every year, two children from each of the country’s twelve districts are selected and forced to fight to the death in a battle known as the Hunger Games. You can watch the first movie on one of the premium subscriber networks available through DirectTV. Find out more at Directtvdeal.com/direct-tv-deal.html.

Catching Fire picks up not long after The Hunger Games left off. Katniss (Lawrence) and Peeta (Hutcherson) are forced to do a “victory tour” after being declared co-winners of the Hunger Games. Since they were never intended to both come out alive, President Snow (Donald Sutherland) and everyone else at the Capital are not pleased with the situation. When the victors begin to tour the districts of Panem, it becomes clear that they are on the brink of an uprising against the government. While Katniss and Peeta don’t know what to do amidst the unrest, the decision is soon taken out of their hands with the introduction of the next Hunger Games—the “Quarter Quell.” Suddenly both Katniss and Peeta realize their lives are no longer safe as they prepare to enter the arena for a second fight to the death.

The Anticipation

In April, the first teaser trailer for Catching Fire was revealed during the MTV Movie Awards. Since The Hunger Games had ruled the awards show in 2012, this was the perfect outlet to get the teaser seen by millions of fans. While the teaser took an in-depth look at the victory tour, it shied away from revealing too much about the movie’s plot or showing too many key moments. In July, however, the cast from Catching Fire hosted a panel discussion at San Diego Comic Con. As part of the panel, which was attended by over 6000 fans according to CBS News, the full-length theatrical trailer was previewed. This time, fans could catch glimpses of training for the new Hunger Games as well as getting a first look at several new cast members. The hype surrounding the panel added to the fan anticipation for the movie. For now, however, fans will have to content themselves with watching the trailers on repeat until the publicity tours for the film begin in earnest right before its release this fall.
